The Island of Ireland is a thriving hub of innovation with robust startup activity with more than 4,500 indigenous startups that have raised over €7 Billion in investments over the last 5 years.

Among sectors, HealthTech, Enterprise Solutions and FinTech make 50% of all tech startups on the island. There are also sizable clusters of CleanTech, Security and SportsTech companies.

Ireland has a long standing reputation in Medical Device technologies, and in recent times, the ecosystem is winning the Artificial Intelligence race as more than 250 AI product companies are developing solutions to scale globally.

Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have a significant landspace of home-grown Venture Capital firms, Business Angel Networks that are well supported by State Investment bodies like Enterprise Ireland and Invest Northern Ireland. There are more than 50 domestic VC firms that have deployed over €1 Billion in capital from pre-seed to Series rounds in the last 3 years. 

Irish startups also attract significant international funding with 9 of the top 10 European Funds having invested here. More than 800 global Investors have participated in funding rounds by Irish startups, and this is growing year-on-year as investors from new geographies begin to take particular interest in the growth of the Irish startup sector.

Innovation Hubs & Research Centres

There are more than 300 innovation hubs, co-working facilities, research centres across the island with a number of key hubs offering startup accelerator and incubation supports. Fexco’s RDI Hub in County Kerry in the South West to Ormeau Baths in Belfast, the island has a strong network of Hubs that coordinate and collaborate in delivering startup programmes. 

Science Foundation Ireland is a State agency that funds university research through its network of 16 specialised research centres that focus on a range of domains from Advanced Manufacturing to Marine research, Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.

Nearly half of all innovation hubs are in the regions outside Dublin. Portershed in Galway, Creative Spark in Dundalk, Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen are some of the many examples of fine innovation communities that are pioneering efforts to promote the regions.
